An attorney’s first ever oral argument can feel daunting, but for Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher associate Jeff Liu there was an added challenge: he’d be arguing his second case only hours later.

It was mid-December when Liu received back-to-back notices from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and the Federal Circuit alerting him that arguments in two pro bono cases he was handling were both calendared for Feb. 9—one remotely, and one in person.
