Judge Diane Wood on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit announced her plans to take senior status on confirmation of her successor, giving President Joe Biden his third opportunity to fill a seat on the Chicago-based federal appeals court.

Wood, nominated to the court in 1995 by former President Bill Clinton, was chief judge from 2013 until last July and is currently a senior lecturer at the University of Chicago Law School. She notified the White House Thursday of her plans to take senior status, a form of semiretirement that allows federal judges who qualify to be assigned a lighter caseload.
