The U.S. Supreme Court has allowed Texas’ six-week ban on abortions to go into effect Wednesday morning, as the justices have not yet responded to a request from abortion providers in the state to halt the measure.

The lack of action from the court, following orders from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit that blocked a planned hearing on a preliminary injunction against the ban from taking place earlier in the week, means the measure—among the strictest laws against abortions in the country—is now on the books.
