The federal judiciary is recommending the creation of 79 new permanent judgeships, with several courts in a judicial emergency and judges say they’re struggling with caseloads due to a lack of jurists.

The recommendation was released after the Judicial Conference, the administrative body for the federal judiciary, held its semi-annual meeting Tuesday. While the group typically gathers at the U.S. Supreme Court, this meeting—like its past two prior meetings—was held virtually due to the pandemic.
