On the second day of the U.S. Supreme Court’s historic telephonic arguments, Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. managed again to keep his colleagues and the advocates to a precisely timed script that unfolded without technical and other pitfalls of similar argument experiments in the appellate courts.

The second day was as relatively uneventful as the first, with the court providing real-time audio streaming of the arguments for the first time in history. The court finished Tuesday’s arguments only 10 minutes over the traditional 60 minutes. Tuesday’s hearing was seven minutes shorter than Monday’s brief overtime. And that is undoubtedly what Roberts, who places a high value on order and decorum, hoped the court would accomplish.
