As Legaltech West Coast 2016 opened on Monday in San Francisco, it became clear that federal regulators will be taking a more active role in corporate big data and that federal judges will be taking a more active role in e-discovery.

The first day of the conference included a keynote by Federal Trade Commission Western Regional Director Thomas Dahdouh and several panels, including U.S. magistrate judges Mitchell Dembin (S.D. Cal.), Elizabeth Laporte (N.D. Cal.) and Andrew Peck (S.D.N.Y.), discussing the impact of the e-discovery amendments to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure.
