It’s a given in today’s era that e-discovery has moved to the cloud. However, not all cloud e-discovery solutions are created equal. In fact, cloud computing has become an amorphous term easily confused with true software-as-a-service (SaaS)—which offers scalability, elasticity, accessibility, security, and predictable affordability.
Unfortunately, many cloud-hosted options do not support the same benefits. Legal teams seeking these benefits in the cloud should carefully assess the difference. Gartner notes in its 2015 Magic Quadrant for E-Discovery Software, “Although many offerings are labeled as ‘SaaS,’ caution should be given because some of them are really hosted rather than true SaaS.” Cloud-hosted solutions may offer some cloud benefits such as more accessibility, but they’re not able to offer the same benefits a true SaaS solution can offer.
