The digitization of the medical industry is a hot button topic as the healthcare system looks to simplify records operations and better address patient needs. This week, a leading California healthcare system announced it will be offering patients the option of consenting to surgery via electronic signature at the bedside — another step in the evolution of simplifying medical operations with technology.

The Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System (SVMHS) in California is adopting an electronic signature solution from Access Inc., a form management provider that will enable patients to authorize surgery from the bedside without having to go through a print process. The SVMHS will offer e-forms that patients sign securely and are directly processed into its MEDITECH electronic health records (EHR) system.
