  • Sidley and Jones Day post healthy autumn NQ retention rates in London

    The London office of Sidley Austin has achieved a 100% trainee retention rate for its September intake, with all nine of the firm's autumn qualifiers accepting offers in their first-choice practice areas. Several of the US firm's newly qualified (NQ) lawyers were offered places in more than one practice group in the office, and it is understood that at least one practice group was left disappointed when it did not receive any trainees. However, the firm does not have any current plans to expand its trainee intake numbers.

  • Shearman offers jobs to 11 of 13 autumn qualifiers in London

    Shearman & Sterling's London office has offered 11 jobs to 13 trainees qualifying at the US firm this September. Although the number of acceptances has not yet been confirmed, the 85% offer rate is broadly in line with the previous year, when the firm offered seven of its eight-strong intake (87.5%) a role at the firm.

  • Retention rates at top 20 decline as economic climate pushes firms to cut back

    Trainee retention rates across the bulk of the UK's largest law firms have fallen this year, with research by Legal Week finding the average rate has dropped by almost 10% on last spring's qualifying intake. At the top 20 UK firms with a spring intake, an average of 76.5% of newly qualified (NQ) lawyers have been kept on this year, 9% down on the equivalent intake last year and 3% lower than last autumn's qualifying round. Of 441 trainees at the firms to have released details to date, 343 have been kept on – down on the total of 358 of 422 NQs kept on across the same group in spring 2012.

    Hogan Lovells, SJ Berwin and Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) have become the latest UK top 20 firms to confirm their trainee retention figures for spring 2013, with all three posting lower rates than the equivalent intake last year. Hogan Lovells has posted a 76% retention rate after 26 newly qualified (NQ) lawyers accepted a role at the firm, from an intake of 34 trainees.

    Magic circle duo Clifford Chance (CC) and Linklaters have posted their retention results for their spring qualifying trainees, with the former seeing a marginal rise in its intake.     Addleshaw Goddard and Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) have become the latest firms to announce retention rates for their March qualifying trainees, with the latter seeing a significant drop on the equivalent round last year. BLP has offered 14 of its 22 newly-qualified trainees (NQs) a position at the firm. All have accepted, giving it a retention rate of 64%.

    Nabarro has cut back the number of trainee vacancies if offers by almost 30%, as the firm becomes one of the first of the UK top 50 to confirm its retention figures for this spring's qualifying intake. The firm has slimmed down the number of available training contracts to 25 for the July 2013 deadline, down from thirty-five on offer in July last year.

  • Trainee retention rates dip in 2012 as post-recession recovery falters

    Trainee retention rates at UK law firms have dipped this year for the first time since the height of the downturn in 2009, according to a new survey of 123 commercial firms. The research, conducted by the Chambers Student Guide, found that 2,074 out of 2,620 qualifying trainees were kept on at their firms this year, equating to an overall retention rate of 79.1%, down on last year's rate of 80.5%.
