  • Quartet of top UK firms confirm retention rates for September NQs

    Herbert Smith and Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) are among a raft of firms to have announced their September trainee retention rates this month. Herbert Smith is set to keep on 44 out of 55 of its newly-qualified lawyers (NQs) this autumn, equating to a retention rate of 80%, while BLP will see 95% - 19 out of 20 - of its trainees staying at the firm.

  • A&O, Macfarlanes and BLG confirm autumn NQ retention rates

    Allen & Overy (A&O), Macfarlanes and Barlow Lyde & Gilbert have all confirmed their trainee retention figures for autumn 2011. A&O is set to retain 38 of its 53 newly-qualified lawyers (NQs), giving the magic circle firm a retention rate of 72%, after 39 offers were made, marking a decrease on the firm's spring round this year when 88% of trainees were kept on.

  • Slaughters and Sidley post 100% retention rates for autumn NQ intakes

    Slaughter and May and Sidley Austin have both posted 100% retention rates for their autumn intake of newly-qualified lawyers (NQs). Slaughters is set to keep on all of its 59 trainees in September, marking an increase on recent rounds, after the firm retained 96% of its NQs in March 2011 and 93% in autumn 2010.

  • Shearman London office keeps on all bar one of September qualifiers

    Shearman & Sterling has become the first firm in the City to announce its September retention rates, with the US firm set to retain 11 of its 12 of its qualifying trainees. Shearman has offered 11 positions to its September qualifiers, equating to a retention rate of 92%. All trainees who were offered a job accepted the offer.

  • Trainee retention at UK's top 30 law firms up 10% against last year

    Trainee retention rates at the UK's 30 largest law firms have risen across the majority of practices, with the average rate across the group nearly 10% higher than in March 2010. Average retention across the UK top 30 firms stands at 84% when considering the number of job offers against the number of qualifying trainees. This figure drops marginally to 83% when taking into account rejected job offers. This compares with an average retention of just 75% this time last year, when job offers were affected by the prolonged economic downturn.

  • Linklaters and Addleshaws announce retention rates for March NQ intakes

    Linklaters has become the latest City firm to post its March retention rates, with 50 out of 60 (83%) qualifying trainees offered a permanent position with the firm. Of the 50 trainees offered a newly-qualified (NQ) role, 49 accepted the offer, resulting in an overall retention rate of 82%.

    Herbert Smith, Clifford Chance (CC) and Macfarlanes have announced the retention rates for their 2011 newly-qualified (NQ) intakes. At Herbert Smith, 44 out of 48 (92%) qualifying trainees were offered a permanent position with the firm, and of those, 43 accepted, resulting in an overall retention rate of 90%. The top 10 City firm's most recent retention figure is higher than the figure announced in September 2010, when 75% of qualifying trainees were kept on.

    Norton Rose is to change the cycle of its trainee intake from January to May, as the City firm announces its latest retention figures for qualifying trainees. This year the top 10 City law firm has had a January intake, but will also have intakes in both May and September. This will be followed in 2012 by a permanent change to intakes in May and September.

Out of the 56 trainees to be offered a newly-qualified (NQ) position, 54 accepted the offer, resulting in an overall retention rate of 84%. The magic circle firm's most recent retention figure is slightly higher than the figure announced at the same time last year, when only 83% of qualifying trainees were offered a position and 80% were retained.

  • Camerons' March retention to fall to 63%

    CMS Cameron McKenna is set to take on only 63% of its trainees due to qualify in March 2011. The firm has 19 vacancies across its UK offices but has a 30-strong intake due to qualify as solicitors in its City headquarters.Sixteen of the positions are in London, with the remainder split between Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Bristol respectively.
