When same-sex marriage became legal in Washington in 2010, Patrick McGlone recognized a potential problem: The family court judges in District of Columbia Superior Court had no experience dealing with the dissolution of such marriages and hadn’t been briefed on how the new law would effect parental rights and similar matters.

McGlone, a senior vice president and general counsel of Washington-based insurance company Ullico Inc., had an idea that he brought to the Council for Court Excellence, a nonpartisan, nonprofit group that advocates to improve the workings of Washington’s local and federal courts. McGlone has been active with the group for five years and now serves as its vice president.
