Following the Jan. 12 earthquake that killed 200,000 people in Haiti, Jayne Fleming hosted a fundraiser to help out, but she wanted to do more.
So she volunteered to go to Haiti in March. Fleming, pro bono counsel to Reed Smith’s San Francisco office, had never been there before but had worked on human rights issues in Honduras and Guatemala. Her initial goal was to find people who could be evacuated from the devastation under a humanitarian parole policy that had been hastily approved by U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano for Haitians with medical conditions, orphans or who had other severe needs.
