In a 2011 arbitration case, he led a team at then-Mallesons Stephen Jaques, representing manufacturer White Industries Australia Ltd. on a successful claim againstthe Republic of India of violating thebilateral investment treaty between the two countries. Bonnell had been a partner with Mallesons since 1999, having first joined the firm four years earlier. He began his career with the predecessor firm of the large Australian firm Allens. White & Case officially opened its doors in Sydney in September with project finance partnersJoel Rennie andCameron Watson. Both lawyers joined the firm from Herbert Smith Freehills as part of a 10-partner exodus from the Anglo-Australian firm a little over a year ago. They launched both Sydney and Melbourne offices for the U.S. firm. Herbert Smith Freehills subsequently sued the departing partners over anoncompete clause in their contracts. As a result of the lawsuit, these lawyers first joined White & Case as senior lawyers in March and became partners in September. <
