More worlds to conquer - Slaughters and the emerging economies

Thirteen years after the firm moved to first publicly articulate its global outlook, the international strategy of Slaughter and May continues to spark intense debate among the upper reaches of the global legal market. Shunning the committed international expansion of its magic circle rivals in the 1990s, Slaughters, under then senior partner Giles Henderson, outlined a vision of elite independent law firms co-operating globally in a cover feature for Commercial Lawyer. Though the phrase was never used, it was the system that came to be widely known, somewhat incongruously, as 'best friends', a model built around a core of allied firms in Europe.

China: Years of the dragon

On Tuesday 4 May at 7:30am a car arrived to pick up former Lovells Beijing managing partner Robert Lewis from his house in the Shunyi district of the Chinese capital, a part of town popular with expats. As it weaved its way off the estate and onto the traffic-choked main road leading to the city centre, Lewis thought about what lay ahead for him at AllBright Law Offices, the Chinese law firm where he was about to start his first day's work. His decision to join the firm, where his brief is to overhaul AllBright's structure and expand its Beijing office to match its market-leading offering in Shanghai, is one Lewis has been edging towards for years now, and he maintains it is unrelated to Lovells' recently concluded merger with US firm Hogan & Hartson.

China's lawyers join web revolution as discussion board stirs up online debate

"When the market goes up, you are [the firm's] money-making machine," the comment from Lawsman starts. "You will be exhausted, but they will keep you well-oiled and well-fed. But once the market is seizing up, you will be cast aside as a worn-out tool even though you still work efficiently."It is an ominous warning and one that reflects the sentiments of so many dime-a-dozen comments on legal blogs such as Above the Law, Greedy Associates and RollonFriday. Young lawyers in the US and UK are a vociferous, demanding lot. And now, it seems, young Chinese lawyers are doing the same.

Asian newcomers size up an uncertain market

The jet lag flying from New York to Hong Kong is bad enough for a solo traveller. For a family with two young children in tow, it is an absolute killer."We slept through the night last night," says Yash Rana, sitting in his office in the IM Pei-designed Bank of China Tower less than a week after the fateful flight. "That was a treat."Rana has moved his family halfway around the world so he can take charge of Goodwin Procter's new Hong Kong office, which opened in November to become the Boston-based law firm's first overseas location.
