Commentary: A&O bets on the IP market – but will it go the distance?

It's not often you see magic circle firms turn to national players for lateral partner hires, but Allen & Overy (A&O) recently made an exception with the hire of intellectual property (IP) litigators Neville Cordell and Huw Evans from DLA Piper and Wragge & Co respectively. The most interesting thing about the pairing is not where the hires came from, but that a firm like A&O made them at all. Coming after a prolonged boom that saw many of the larger City firms' commitment to IP questioned while more lucrative corporate and finance work was on offer, the latest additions take A&O to six IP partners in London, three of whom will primarily focus on disputes.

White & Case acts on record Nordic fundraising

White & Case has acted on the largest-ever Nordic private equity fundraising, advising buy-out firm Nordic Capital on a €4.3bn (£3.6bn) fund. The deal saw funds partner Matthew Judd leading a team of partners across offices in London, the US and Sweden, advising on the structuring, establishment and closing of Nordic Capital Fund VII. The team included partners Ulf Johansson (corporate) in Stockholm and Ken Raskin (executive compensation, benefits and employment) in New York.The firm began working on the deal for Nordic Capital last year, with the fund closing last month having exceeded its initial target by €600m (£498m).

Sidley signs up Covington City tax man

Sidley Austin has bagged a new tax partner in London, taking on David Hinds from the City arm of rival US firm Covington & Burling. Hinds, who was also a partner at Covington, will focus on fund formation work and fund-related transactions. Prior to joining Covington in 2002, Hinds was a partner at SJ Berwin. He is chairman of the UK branch of the International Fiscal Association.

French indy hits North Africa with Casablanca launch

French independent August & Debouzy has opened in Morocco, marking the Paris firm's first venture outside of Europe. August & Debouzy, traditionally known for its employment work, has opened the branch in Casablanca in a bid to attract work from international investors. The respected French firm has one other foreign post in Brussels.
