Cultural revolution – China's emerging ranks of female partners on making it to the top

"Be a rainmaker or don't make partner," says Cheryl Luan, partner in Guantao Law Firm's Beijing office. In 1979, there were less than 200 licensed lawyers in the People's Republic of China (PRC) and by 2010 China had 206,000 lawyers nationwide. Of those, it is roughly estimated that 22% or 45,000 plus are female. It wasn't until the early '90s that the legal market really started to blossom. Those who have made it to partnership over the last 20 to 30 years are China's first generation of lawyers. They "only have peers, not predecessors", says Shao-Ying Mautner, managing director at GC.GC. And they are not just rainmakers; they are "ground breaking". While it is not possible to ascertain the percentage of female partners in the PRC, there is consensus that although there are equal or even more numbers of women entering the profession, for now their representation at partnership level is significantly lower to men and comparable to the trends found in other countries. At the same time the success and talents of prominent female lawyers in the China region is drawing attention.

Ex-Lovells Beijing head leaves AllBright to join elite Chinese firm

The former Lovells partner who helped kick off a trend last year by joining Chinese firm AllBright Law Offices has moved on to a bigger role at an elite domestic practice, writes The Asian Lawyer. Robert Lewis this month confirmed that he had left 380-lawyer AllBright to join Beijing's Zhong Lun Law Offices as international managing partner. In his new role, Lewis will work with Zhong Lun managing partner Zhang Xuebing to develop the firm's cross-border practice, focusing on both inbound foreign investment and outbound deals on behalf of Chinese companies.

Networking in Chinese - Hogan Lovells' Sino Global Legal Alliance

Ask any expat partner and they'll tell you that, when it comes to business in China, relationships are key. These days, Chinese state-owned corporations are generating an ever-increasing amount of lucrative outbound M&A work. But for foreign firms - restricted by regulation to just two offices in China - establishing relationships with potential clients outside the traditional confines of Beijing and Shanghai is a problem not easily overcome. His decision to join the firm, where his brief is to overhaul AllBright's structure and expand its Beijing office to match its market-leading offering in Shanghai, is one Lewis has been edging towards for years now, and he maintains it is unrelated to Lovells' recently concluded merger with US firm Hogan & Hartson.
