REPORTS ON THE SUBPRIME lending fiasco have focused on the residential real estate market, but the demise of mortgage companies such as HomeBanc Mortgage Corp., SouthStar Funding LLC and Home Capital Inc. is having a ripple effect on the Atlanta commercial real estate market.

Mortgage brokerage and lending companies occupied more than 2.6 million square feet of office space in metro Atlanta, according to statistics compiled by The Dorey Companies, a commercial real estate research firm. More than 466,000 square feet of office space used by these three companies is expected to be remarketed this year.
