The Supreme Court of Georgia has announced that Gov. Brian Kemp is allocating up to $110 million in federal COVID-19 relief funds to focus on the backlog of court cases in counties across the state, including those involving violent crimes.

The monies are coming from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), a $1.9 trillion stimulus package signed into law by President Joe Biden in March. Georgia’s justice system operated under a statewide judicial emergency order from March 2020 through June 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic, meaning some cases could be tried virtually, but others, which require in-person proceedings, were delayed.
