Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Harold Melton signed a new coronavirus emergency order Thursday opening the option of restarting grand jury proceedings.

The new order includes “a green light on grand jury proceedings—at the discretion of the courts,” as Melton put it Tuesday during an emergency Zoom session of the Georgia Council of Superior Court Judges. It also sets up a path forward to jury trials. The order extends until Oct. 10 the Statewide Judicial Emergency first declared on March 14 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This is the sixth time it has been extended for 30 days as state law allows.
