“Over 100 banks have been sued in at least 19 states by plaintiffs’ lawyers claiming that their clients, usually (but not always ) CPA firms, assisted borrowers who got PPP loans from banks and that therefore the plaintiffs were entitled under the CARES Act to ‘agents fees.’ Synovus took the position there was utterly no basis for that claim of entitlement,” Jim Butler said.

These days, Jim Butler of Butler Wooten & Peak, lion of the plaintiff’s bar, has been working on the side of corporate defense.
“We do it for friends,” he said in an interview. Those include: Synovus Bank, AFLAC, Hughston Clinic, all based in Butler’s hometown of Columbus, Georgia—although his firm also has offices in Atlanta and Savannah. Those “on-request” engagements have been “based on relationships we’ve had for a long, long time,” he said.
