Early last June, CoreLogic, a global property information, analytics, and data-enabled solutions provider, released its 2017 Storm Surge Report that projected 6.9 million homes would be at risk of storm surge flooding along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts due to an overactive hurricane season. Oftentimes, the striking images of fallen trees and roof damage takes the attention from the true culprit for the most common and devastating form of hurricane damage: storm surge flooding.
According to FEMA, every state in the United States has experienced flooding due to a storm surge or flash flood in the past five years. However, only five million property owners take the initiative to protect their assets with flood insurance. This disconnect can lead to disastrous results, with property owners having to pick up the pieces on their own after a catastrophic water event.
