The Florida Supreme Court on Thursday rejected a petition requesting the adoption of a form of diploma privilege that would allow law graduates to bypass the bar exam.

That decision means J.D.s who want to join the Florida Bar must either take the one-day online bar exam scheduled for Oct. 13, or wait for subsequent administrations of the test to become licensed. The court reasoned that the bar exam is an important public protection that helps ensure that attorneys are competent to practice.
