With Justice Anthony Kennedy’s retirement announcement Wednesday, Judge William Pryor of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit is once again in the spotlight as one of President Donald Trump’s top choices to solidify a conservative majority on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Pryor is a scholarly judge who has spoken out against activism and in devotion to the law and efficiency of the courts. He took a stand in an ongoing debate about the decline in oral argument before federal courts, downplaying the issue in a New York Times opinion piece. Hearing more oral argument—rather than relying solely on the briefs from lawyers on both sides—“would only delay decisions that should be speedy,” he said.
