COMMUNITY COURT PERILS

Although Hartford Community Court Judge Raymond Norko deals with mostly quality of life crimes-misdemeanors such as trespassing, prostitution and disorderly conduct-there are times when some defendants may not be entirely happy with his rulings.

While recently joking with a court marshal who was checking his mail, Norko commented, “Yeah, this one looks safe,” while holding up a letter to the light. The letter had a return address from a federal prison.

Norko was not joking, however, a week earlier, when members of the state police took away correspondence addressed to him from “Osama Bin Laden” with the word “death” also written on it. Police were concerned, Norko said, because the letter contained a “crunchy material” inside.

“It was an ugly looking, suspicious letter,” Norko said.

Norko said that, as of Oct. 16, he had not heard from the police as to whether the material was considered dangerous or not.

SANTIAGO OPENS OWN FIRM

Former National Hispanic Bar President Rafael Santiago has left Robinson & Cole, where he was counsel, to launch his own firm: the Santiago Law Group in Hartford.

Although Santiago is hesitant to discuss the details of the new venture, he reportedly left Robinson & Cole on Oct. 4.

Robinson & Cole Managing Partner Eric Daniels could not be reached for comment.
At least three other attorneys-including John Wolfson and Robert Feiner, formerly Feiner Wolfson, and Manchester solo Andrea Hewitt-will be working with Santiago in the new firm.

According to Santiago, he will manage the firm while the three attorneys will work in an of counsel capacity.
