The backlash against the Muslim and Arab communities following terrorist attacks hit home in Connecticut last fall, when a man fired several gunshots at the Baitul Aman Mosque in Meriden.

No one was inside when 48-year-old Ted Hakey Jr. of Meriden opened fire with a rifle because he was upset about the November terrorist attacks in Paris. Hakey had proclaimed “I hate ISLAM!” and “All Muslims must die!” in private Facebook messages. Hakey pleaded guilty in February to a federal hate crime offense and awaits sentencing.
