For more than a year, the parties in a lawsuit against the maker of a military-style weapon used in the Newtown school massacre have skirmished in the press and in court briefs. On Feb. 22, the opposing counsel had their first opportunity to make their case to a judge.
Superior Court Judge Barbara Bellis presided over a hearing on a motion by Remington Arms, the maker of the Bushmaster AR-15 rifle, to dismiss the lawsuit filed by families of victims in the Sandy Hook school shooting. Bellis, who has been a state judge for 13 years and was a private practice attorney for 17 years before that, said she hopes to have a decision on the motion within 60 days.
