Like any global company, United Technologies Corp. makes managing its use of outside law firms a high priority. To ensure efficiency and financial performance, the legal department at UTC has made a number of strategic moves.

First, the enormous Connecticut-based company with many divisions and subsidiaries, including Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, United Technologies Aerospace Systems, Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. and Otis Elevator Co., has reduced the number of outside firms it uses. Second, the company has taken steps to aggressively evaluate each case that might be better handled using outside counsel. And third, the company has used alternative fee arrangements to reduce its legal spending.
