For obvious privacy reasons, a manager of a business wouldn’t dream of asking whether he can come into a job candidate’s home and take a look around. So why is it OK to ask a prospective or current employee to fork over their passwords to social media sites such as Facebook so the employer can look around?

That’s the argument being made by some lawyers who support a proposed state law banning password requests by employers. The measure would prevent an employer from firing, disciplining or retaliating against an employee or job applicant who refuses to provide a password to an online account or who files a complaint after being asked to hand over the password.
