For several years, Quinnipiac University has been trying to disband its women’s volleyball team. Each attempt has been spiked by a federal judge’s ruling that such a move would put the Hamden-based school in violation of Title IX, the federal law that ensures gender equity in educational programs.

Now the university has decided to settle a long-standing lawsuit brought by the American Civil Liberties Union of Connecticut. Specifically, Quinnipiac will retain all of its existing women’s sports teams, including volleyball, and will allocate more scholarships to female athletes. The school has recently added varsity women’s golf and rugby and expanded its women’s track program.
