The recent controversy over the conduct and remarks of state Representative Ernest Hewett, D-New London, reveals more than Hewett’s unfitness for office, and Democratic leaders’ condemnable attempts to secrete it. It exposes the politically partisan character and blatant double standards of the state’s Permanent Commission on the Status of Women, and its executive director, Teresa Younger.

Hewett caused a stir when he made what many now construe as a lewd remark to a teenage girl during a public hearing: "If you’re bashful, I’ve got a snake sitting under my desk here." Before any other details about Hewett emerged, Democratic House Speaker Brendan Sharkey gave this notable take: "It’s hard for anyone who heard the audio or was there to think it was anything other than a sexual innuendo." At first, one might have bought the suggestion of some that Hewett’s comment was not meant to be sexually suggestive — until Mr. Hewett continued to talk.
