After 12 years in the post, Chief Public Defender Gerard A. Smyth is planning to retire effective Sept.1, but will continue working – on both the state and national level – toward ensuring legal representation for indigent criminal defendants.
Smyth’s 30-year career as a public defender will be remembered both for his successes as a trial litigator and as an administrator. Under his tenure, the Division of Public Defender Services has moved into the spotlight as one of the most respected public defender offices in the country, attorneys agree.
