An internationally-recognized pathologist won a $4.2 million verdict after he claimed he was fired from a medical laboratory for complaining that changes to a medical test could confuse doctors and ultimately hurt patients.

Dr. G. Berry Schumann prevailed under a workplace free-speech statute that allows plaintiffs to collect lawyer’s fees. The Bridgeport jury also approved yet-to-be-determined punitive damages, and Schumann made a timely offer of judgment that could more than double the verdict amount, said his lawyer, Stephen J. Fitzgerald of New Haven’s Garrison, Levin-Epstein, Chimes & Richardson.
