Wednesday’s confirmation of Connecticut’s U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut was historic and drew widespread praise, bringing forth Vanessa Avery to be the first Black woman to serve in the role, and making good on President Joe Biden’s vow to increase diversity on the federal bench.

Avery will take over for interim U.S. Attorney Leonard Boyle, who took office following the resignation of U.S. Attorney John Durham in February. Durham was chosen by former President Donald Trump to serve, and dedicated much of his time to investigating the origins of allegations of ties between Russia and Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.
