The Connecticut Bar Foundation named 68 new fellows to its James W. Cooper Fellows Program, celebrating their installation in May with a reception at the New Haven Lawn Club.
“We are pleased to recognize our new fellows for their distinguished services to our legal system and for their commitment to the principles of equal justice and the rule of law,” said CBF President Andrea Barton Reeves.
The Fellows Program, which recognizes outstanding attorneys and judges, is now in its 23rd year. The group includes attorneys, U.S. Court of Appeals judges, state Supreme Court, district, appellate and Superior Court judges. It also includes corporate counsel, attorneys in nonprofit associations and legal services agencies.
The program is named in honor of James W. Cooper, who served as president of the CBF from 1973 to 1975 and made a generous bequest to the organization. He was also a past president of the Connecticut Bar Association from 1957 to 1958. He taught at Yale Law School from 1930 to 1932 and was a senior partner at Tyler, Cooper and Alcorn in New Haven.
CBF and the James W. Cooper Fellows Program promote a better understanding of the legal profession and ways to improve the administration of justice in Connecticut through educational and outreach programs including the Interest on Lawyers’ Trust Accounts and the Interest on Trust Accounts programs, supporting legal services for the poor; as well as judicial/court fees grants-in-aid programs.
