The number of patent lawsuits filed in the first quarter of 2016 dropped to its lowest point since 2011, according to entities that track patent litigation data. But this does not mean the patent litigation tide is finally turning.

Lex Machina, RPX Corp. and Unified Patents all reported that fewer patent lawsuits were filed between January and March than during the fourth quarter of 2015. The number was also down compared with the first quarter of 2015. Unified Patents reported that the number of patent disputes in the first quarter this year decreased 28 percent compared with the fourth quarter of 2015, and 25 percent compared with the first quarter of 2015.
