Just a year after appointing Matt Zabel as general counsel and executive vice president, Target is promoting the 13-year company veteran to a new role, chief corporate affairs officer, that reports to CEO Brian Cornell.

As general counsel, Zabel was the No. 2 leader in the legal department, reporting to chief legal and risk officer Don Liu. Immediately before taking that post, Zabel was senior VP of risk and employee and labor relations, a role that also reported to Liu.
