Midmarket companies are giving in-house legal professionals higher salaries and more incentives this year than in 2020, according to a survey published Wednesday.

This is true, at least, of the top roles in legal departments. At companies with revenues of up to $2 billion, chief legal officers with minimal support staff received median total compensation of $225,000 in 2021, the survey said. The Association of Corporate Counsel and human resources consulting firm Empsight International, which authored the survey, reported in a 2020 publication a median total compensation of $211,500 for the same role. The 2021 figure represents a 6.4% increase.
