Most of us are uncomfortable, and correctly so in my opinion, asking friends and relatives any variation of the rather personal question, “So, how much money do you make?”

But what qualifies as polite in one context may translate into a missed opportunity in another. Specifically, I recommend that you talk about compensation with peers at other companies. I see some of you cringing. But consider it.
