After its top lawyer resigned last month, Marathon Oil Corp. is bringing back one of its former  assistant general counsels to lead the Houston-based company’s legal department. 

The newly appointed general counsel, Kimberly Warnica, left Marathon four years ago and now serves as the chief lawyer, compliance officer and secretary for Alta Mesa Resources Inc., another energy company in Houston.
