The national average salary and total compensation for general counsel and chief legal officers went up in 2020, but not significantly from 2019, according to ALM Intelligence’s 2020 Law Department Compensation Benchmarking Survey. The data shines a light on just how different compensation for law firm lawyers and in-house lawyers has become, on average.

Data from ALM Intelligence, released Wednesday, shows that the national average salary for these law department leaders is approximately $385,000, compared with $384,000 in 2019. In terms of total compensation, general counsel and chief legal officers brought in an average of $573,000 in total compensation in 2020, which is up from $555,000 in 2019.
