Allen & Overy
has hired a litigation partner for its Perth office.
Mark van Brakel was previously a Perth partner with
Corrs Chambers Westgarth
. He advises on both local and cross-border disputes, focusing particularly on the energy and resources sectors.
Van Brakel also advises on regulatory investigations. Last year, he successfully represented longtime client Fortescue Metals Group Ltd. against charges by the Australian Securities and Investment Commission that the iron ore company misled Chinese investors about certain contractual obligations.
A partner at Corrs Chambers since 2009, van Brakel joined that firm from
’s Perth office, where he was also a partner. Earlier in his career, he worked as a state prosecutor.
He is Allen & Overy’s second disputes partner in Australia and he is expected to work closely with Sydney-based litigation partner John Samaha.
