Tokyo-based Nishimura & Asahi will open a Fukuoka office in July.

It is the fourth domestic office for the 500-lawyer firm, which last year opened branches in Osaka and Nagoya.

The new office will be led by partner Tsuneyasu Ozaki along with senior associate Yasuko Maita. A small number of other associates will also work there.

Fukuoka, the sixth-largest city in Japan, is a major economic center situated on the southern island of Kyushu. Along with nearby Kitakyushu, Fukuoka is home to several major corporations, including toilet maker Toto Ltd. and electronic retailer Best Denki Co. Ltd.

Japanese law prohibits law partnerships from having more than one office in the country. As a result, Nishimura’s Fukuoka office, like its Nagoya and Osaka offices, will be organized as part of a legal professional corporation that is technically separate from the Tokyo partnership.

The firm, one of Tokyo’s Big Four corporate law firms, has also been expanding abroad of late. Earlier this week, it announced plans to open offices in Myanmar and Thailand.
