Indian law firm Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A. Shroff Co. has launched an office in Ahmedabad, India’s sixth-largest city.
The new office adds to the 555-lawyer firm’s offices in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai, and will contribute to its aim of doubling in size by the firm’s centenary in 2017, according to an Amarchand statement.
Corporate partner Pankaj Agarwal has relocated to Ahmedabad from Delhi to head the new office, which will have around five other lawyers. In addition, litigation partner Tejas Karia will divide his time between Ahmedabad and Delhi. Amarchand said it plans to expand the office to nine lawyers in its first year.
Ahmedabad, which has a population of around 7 million, was identified in a 2010 report by Forbes as one of the world’s 10 fastest-growing cities. The city is the capital of the wealthy industrial state of Gujarat.
With the new office, Amarchand aims to improve its offering to its existing clients in Gujarat, which include energy, engineering, pharmaceutical, and maritime companies, as well as to attract new business.
Ahmedabad is Amarchand’s second new office announcement this year. Last month, the firm opened an office in Chennai, and also plans to open another in Pune “in the near future,” according to a firm spokeswoman.
