In a case of first impression in New York, a judge has ruled that he can consider a church as a marital asset for purposes of equitable distribution. The judge denied the defendant-husband's motion to bar the valuation of the Brooklyn church he founded, finding that the plaintiff-wife had raised sufficient questions of fact concerning whether the church is the husband's "alter ego," which should be included in the marital estate under a "reverse piercing" of the nonprofit corporate veil.
