The New Jersey Supreme Court last week prohibited county assignment judges from firing municipal court clerks for cause. While the court has ultimate authority over judiciary employees, those it has chosen to designate as career civil service workers are under the jurisdiction of the state's Merit System Board, the court ruled. The court held that an assignment judge was out of line in ordering the firing of deputy municipal court administrator for her violent behavior after a traffic stop.

New Jersey’s judiciary defined the limits of its own power on Wednesday as the state Supreme Court prohibited county assignment judges from firing municipal court clerks for cause.
While the court has ultimate authority over judiciary employees, those it has chosen to designate as career civil service workers are under the jurisdiction of the Merit System Board, the court ruled in Thurber v. Burlington, A-66/67-06.
