A Wyoming rancher should be allowed to sue individual federal workers for harassment and retaliation under federal racketeering law, the rancher's lawyer told the U.S. Supreme Court Monday. The Bureau of Land Management, represented by the Department of Justice, argued that there is no precedent for such lawsuits under current law and thus their employees are immune from them. The justices questioned whether allowing the suit to proceed would flood the legal system with similar lawsuits.

Thermopolis, Wyo., rancher Harvey Frank Robbins maintains that Bureau of Land Management employees pulled his grazing permits and otherwise persecuted him to try to get him to give the government road access across his ranch. The court is considering whether his case can legally continue.
