Republicans are urging Fred Thompson, currently an actor on the NBC drama "Law & Order," to pursue the presidential nomination. Said one pol: "We need that kind of star quality, but most importantly we need his strength and resolve." The minority counsel in the Watergate investigation, Thompson was elected to the Senate in 1994 to fill Al Gore's unexpired term. Thompson left the Senate in 2003 to resume acting, but took an active role in shepherding Chief Justice John Roberts through his confirmation.
