Contempt fines are mounting at the rate of $1,000 a day against Emani Taylor, a lawyer who served three years as guardian for John L. Phillips, a retired New York Civil Court judge. The current property guardian asserts that Taylor, without either an accounting or a court order, had written checks to herself totaling $187,000 from Phillips' accounts and had made "improper disbursements" of an additional $406,000. Taylor says that withdrawals she made had been for expenditures on Phillips' behalf.

As of Friday, the contempt order issued by Brooklyn Acting Supreme Court Justice Michael L. Pesce on Dec. 19 has been in place 22 days.
