William Herbert has joined Smith, Gambrell & Russell as counsel to develop Japanese business after a long sojourn in Japan. "Foreign companies can't ignore the U.S. market," Herbert says, "but there are so many things about the market they don't understand," such as corporate filing and reporting requirements and U.S. product liability law. Herbert says joining Smith Gambrell helps him reacquaint himself with the latest developments in U.S. corporate governance issues and other aspects of U.S. business law.

He spent two years at Lexwell Partners, a Japanese law firm in Tokyo, and four years before that at Sankyo Co. in Tokyo, which he said is the second-largest pharmaceutical manufacturer in Japan.
