Stephen Forte, the managing partner of Smith, Gambrell & Russell, is a man who appreciates tradition but is comfortable with change, as he shepherds one of Atlanta's most venerable firms through the modern era of big-firm consolidation. Since Forte began his tenure, the firm has almost doubled in size, growing from 102 to 192 lawyers, and revenue has gone from $26.5 million to $72 million. "All successful firms want to grow," Forte says, but he doesn't think that firms must become gargantuan to survive.

Forte, 51, grew up in an Italian family in Brooklyn, N.Y. He came to Atlanta to attend Emory University, where he met his wife, and has been there ever since — although, he said, one of his grandmothers still asks when he is coming home.
